Is it double Dutch?

Is it double Dutch?
‘Double Dutch’ is a phrase used in English to mean nonsense, or something that is difficult to understand, as in “It’s all double Dutch to me.” The phrase is thought to have originated in the early 19th Century and is probably due to the difficult relationship with the British and the Dutch in the 17th and 18th Centuries and the fact that the British held the Dutch in very low regard.

Turning Japanese

Turning Japanese
Japan can seem like an alien land to western travellers, with customs that are far removed from European customs, unrecognisable food and an even more unrecognisable writing script. In most western countries, travellers can usually recognise at least a few simple words outside shops, on menus, or on food packaging. In Japan, and other eastern hemisphere countries such as China, that is not always the case.

Learn a New Skill at Knitting Classes

Learn a New Skill at Knitting Classes
Take up knitting today and learn a new skill, make some new friends and even plan to bring in a part time income from an enjoyable activity.

Have you ever thought about learning a new skill that you could use to make something practical, or that you could even earn a part time income from? A knitting class could be just what the doctor ordered as it helps you to become proficient in a new talent, while meeting many interesting people.

Finding the best knitting course

In our highly technical society there are, unsurprisingly, many ways to learn how to knit that don’t involve actually physically attending a class. Online videos could instruct you in the basic stitches and how to solve any problems that you face. DVDs, magazines or books are all also valid tools to help you to learn how to create your first knitted item, be it a scarf, a cuddly toy, a jumper or anything that you can think of.

Although learning from these methods is a valid option, you may find that it takes longer as you will be forced to learn through trial and error much of the time. Should you face difficulties in telling your garter stitch from your purl stitch or your knit stitch, you may wish that your video instructor could actually reach his or her hand out to help to show you what you are doing wrong. If this is the case, you may wish to look up a local class that will teach knitting somewhere near to you. Attending knitting lessons will allow you to meet other people that share a similar desire to improve their ability, and will provide you with an expert tutor ready to carefully instruct you in the different stitches and where and when to use them.

Knitting courses may not be as common as they once were; however due to a recent comeback of knitted goods in the fashion world now is a great time to look for a local opportunity. Why not contact the teacher before attending to see exactly what you could learn and how you could benefit from improving your skill set at that particular institution.

The practical uses of knitting

Perhaps you aren’t convinced that learning to knit is a worthwhile hobby, even with the many different learning opportunities on offer. If that is the case, why not consider some of the practical uses that knitting can bring to the table?

  • A knitted item of clothing makes a great present, be it a scarf for an adult or a cardigan for a newborn baby. Your friends and family will appreciate your effort all the more because it was homemade.

  • With a little practice and tuition you could start to make some clothes for yourself. As wool can be sourced relatively cheaply online or on the high street, you may find that this is an effective and entertaining way to create fashionable and attractive clothing for an affordable price.

  • If you start to enjoy knitting a lot you could even consider setting up a business. You could start to sell some of your wares to local residents, or perhaps even pass on your newfound skills by starting your own knitting lessons.

Learning for life

Knitting is a skill that will stay with you for life once you are familiar with it and have spent some time practicing. Why not look around now for a knitting or sewing class local to you today? You may be pleasantly surprised at the enjoyment to be had.
